Our experience has shown that having developers and testers working together starting at the project’s planning phase results in better quality and less expense. Here’s how:

• Bugs are identified and fixed in the early stages of the project
• Many usability and performance issues are anticipated and addressed from the get-go: having testers involved from the design phase is critical in addressing “how to use” the software … whereas developers are often more concerned with “how to build” it and can overlook potential problems.
• It is more efficient to test at the service (or incremental) levels than to wait until the UI is complete (in other words, toward the end of development).
• In spending time to automate tests earlier in the process we avoid repeating the same regression tests in later iterations, and thus reduce testing costs throughout the project.
